Choreographing a 30-Drone Wedding Show in Skybrush

Sequence design, timing offsets and the mistakes that only show up on the night.

Thirty aircraft, six minutes, one working vineyard, no pyro. That was the brief as it arrived in an email. The reality on site was a launch corridor barely wide enough for a three-row grid, a guest marquee sitting almost directly under the outbound leg, and a wind window that shut somewhere around 21:40. Everything below is what actually went into the Skybrush timeline, not what we planned in the studio.

Building the sequence in Blender first

We block out every formation in Blender before touching Skybrush. For this show that meant three anchor shapes: a monogram, a slow rotating ring, and a wide heart that had to read from the marquee at a shallow angle. The blockout is where you catch geometry that looks fine from the ground station but collapses when viewed from the guests' side. Two of the original transitions were scrapped at this stage because the aircraft would have crossed the marquee line at low altitude.

Timing offsets that only showed up in rehearsal

The rehearsal ran clean on the ground but the drones were hitting their waypoints a full second early. That is enough to break a music cue. We re-timed two transitions in the Skybrush timeline, adding a short hold before the ring expansion and stretching the heart reveal by roughly 800 ms. If you are working with a fixed music track, budget for this kind of correction rather than assuming the export will land on the beat.

Ground station and the backup laptop

The primary ground station ran from a ruggedised laptop on a folding table behind the marquee, with the antenna mast raised just above head height. The backup laptop was already loaded with the same show file and the same firmware version. It stayed closed until the second-to-last battery swap, when the primary machine dropped its link for about four seconds. Nothing dramatic happened, but the swap cost us a minute of the wind window and that minute mattered.

What we would price differently

The client asked afterwards for a second short sequence to run during the speeches, using the same fleet and the same launch grid. That is a reasonable request and it is also a second show. Next time we quote the additional sequence as a separate line from the start, with its own rehearsal slot and its own battery allocation, instead of absorbing it into the original six minutes.
